Snailbests ’09 (Part II)

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Continuing on from Part I, here are the rest of the winners. I made some edits to the last entry, so you can check those out. All in all, it’s been a great awards season. Congratulations to all the Bests! You guys deserve it.

Now back to the show.

Your One Stop Reading Resource

The title of this blog stakes a pretty strong claim. But does it live up to the hype? Browse around the older entries, and you’ll see that it does. Sports, politics, movies, random amusing stories… this site has it all. Where else on the Web would you go to find all of this on one blog?

Januel Nalupta is intelligent, witty, and above all, humorous. Who could forget the Cricket-eating entry, or the Chuck-Lidell encounter. I don’t know why this isn’t a top-50 blog, but I could totally see this as water cooler talk at every office in America. It would go something like, “Did you read One Stop today?” or, “Did you read that One Stop where he ate ——?”

Januel undeniably has a talent for writing content that appeals and entertains the masses. With a blog like One Stop, maybe there really only needs to be one blog on The Roll, and one Snailbest awarded. After all, where else do we need to go?

Snail’s Bite: I love this blog so much. I just wish it would get more traffic! I’d suggest considering a move to Blogger. Here you’ll get more traffic while still keeping the same feel of Xanga. You could also find a layout that accentuates your text-based entries, which are the best part of your blog. Like I said, this blog could easily garner a cult-like following on the net with the right amount of exposure.

Jmotive

Jmotive is the creative outlet of Mary Grace Pingoy. I’ve been talking web-geek with MG since college, when we both worked on the Go4Gold site together. Way back then, she was my inspiration to get my own domain, and (try to) think up a name as cool as Jmotive. If it weren’t for her, Snailbites (and my career!) might not even exist!

The first word that comes to mind when I think of Jmotive is color. And lots of it. I always tell people that MG has excellent taste in color palettes. Everything blends together perfectly and accents the inspirational text of her entries. If you scroll back through her past redesigns, you’ll see what I’m talking about. All of the aesthetics, in addition with her large fan base, make Jmotive one of the most welcoming spots on the Web.

Had to go way back for this one.  This entry tells a beautiful story that few people in the world would be able to tell in the first person. Short, simple and powerful, two paragraphs are all that are needed to open our eyes to a world bigger than ourselves.

Snail’s Bite: I know I’ve told you this a million times, but you should move to WordPress :) Or some other CMS, like Expression Engine or Movable Type. You’d be able to learn a whole lot and archiving is simpler. Even without it though, your site is still awesome.

RichTu

I’ve known RichTu since that awkward teenage puberty phase. I would go to his house back then and he would draw anime characters on scrap paper. I’d always try to copy it and I never could. So I would tell him he should go into art, and finally years later, he’s diligently earning his Masters in Illustration at SVA.

This kid is a genius. The blog doesn’t just show art pieces, but takes you into the mind of an artist. There’s no frills or anything unnecessary. It gives exactly what you’d expect: beautiful art, and the logic behind it. I come here often to get inspired, and also to get humbled. I like to think that by reading RichTu, we can all do the same, and bring out the artist in all of us. If nothing else, window shopping is entertaining enough.

Favorite Entry: Wednesday, August 6, 2008
I actually decided to not pick an entry with original art. This entry gets my pick, because it shows exactly why this blog is amazing. I look at the book and I see disorders. RichTu looks at the book and sees art. Insight is what makes RichTu great, and it is all over this post.

Snail’s Bite: I’d add links to Subscribe and Portfolio in the sidebar. I think as you graduate and become a rockstar designer, you will very easily develop a following.

Witness

Witness is a simple blog with a powerful message. This blog does exactly what it is named to do. It is never preachy or commanding. It simply inspires and uplifts by living a life of holy integrity, and blogging about it. No, this isn’t a place of bragging and patting on the back. It’s a place where lessons are learned, and God shows His face.

Witness surprises you sometimes with its stories of faith. Katrina Galsim, the author, writes just as she lives her life: joyful, funny, honest. And then, out of nowhere, she shows this serious side of devout holiness. The balance between both sides paint a very real picture of a your average young adult seeking Christ in every day life.

Favorite Entry: Your Glory Goes Beyond All Fame
This entry really surprised me. It was so honestly and perfectly Catholic. The quotes and everything add to an intelligent and personal experience with divine grace.

Snail’s Bite: You have so many great pictures in your Picassa. A photo entry once in a while would be awesome.

Yodamita!

I love this blog. I really do. Yodamita is run by Lisa Sanchez, a former coworker of mine, who now teaches English in Japan. That alone is good material for an interesting read. But combine that with her entertaining and albeit, quirky personality, and you’ve found yourself in the world of Yodamita.

Reading Yodamita is like talking to Lisa. “First this, and then this, and then this – but yay!” There was the classic commentary on Japanese inward feet, and the hilarious introspection on Lisa’s acute sense of smell. And at times, there is the random personal entry that makes you step back and think and pray along with the author. Entertainment is the key word here. Check it out with a bowl of Ramen and you will not be disappointed.

Favorite Entry: It’s Been a Good Week. Hooray!
Listening to  J-Pop and checking out pictures of good times in Japan made me feel right at home. This one in particular show exactly why people come to this blog. Fun, adventurous, and Japanese – I love it!

Snail’s Bite: The best part of this blog, is the American perspective of Japanese quirkiness. More of that would be awesome. And I think we’d all love to see more street photos of crazy Japanese stuff. You also might wanna check out this plugin.

So that’s that! I hope you all enjoyed this year’s awards. Stay tuned for the March for Life wrapup and my long-awaited post-engagement reaction, all on draft. Also, I am pleasantly surprised at the response to the poll. Could this have an effect on our decision process…?

Lastly, to all the Snailbests, remember this when you don’t know what to write and your comments are dwindling: someone is reading your blog! You guys are the best. In fact, you are the Snailbests, for 2009. Congratulations!

You win!!!

This month marks my one year anniversary of being in the “Web” industry! I’ve spent alot of time in the past year, not just building stuff, but also analyzing what makes a site good and what makes one bad. So, I’m going to start this new year off right by honoring the best bloggers out there – my Blogroll. To you nine wonderful people, I present to you, the SnailBest Award!  Let me first say a few short words about my Blogroll fam, and then I’ll get down to specifics.

If you’re on The Roll, you’re a very good friend of mine. And you being on The Roll is a big deal to me. Although my criteria for getting on it is gray, I have some general guidelines to determine what stays on (and what goes).

  • First, it helps if you actually write in your blog, and do it somewhat regularly. And ideally, you blog about relevant stuff. Not the, “I was sad today… I need to blog more,” but things that people would actually want to read.
  • Secondly, you’re a good person at heart. There’s alot of negative content out on the web, we don’t need to add to it. Blogs on The Roll should fall in line with the statement, “If every blog on the web were a a descendant of your blog, then the web (and the world) would be a better place.”
  • Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, your blog is just plain entertaining.

So here’s how this is gonna work. I’ll run down The Roll in alphabetical order, say why I think your site is amazing, and then I’ll humbly post a few pointers for a better site (Snail’s Bite).

Ready? Drumroll please!

Cecilia’s Jazz

Cecilia’s Jazz is Cheryl Pipit’s newest creation. She has, as most regular Biters know, an incredible God-given gift for writing.

Cheryl writes just like she lives her life – straight from the heart.  If you ever need a touch of the human element, go here. She mixes a dose of genuine feeling, with some quirky humor, and add in a tiny dash of soapbox oratory. But don’t be fooled by the cute little package and feel good posts that you read on the exterior. This blog packs a powerful emotive punch that can sneak up on you and tugs at your heart strings.

Cecilia’s Jazz is Cheryl’s newest venture away from Xanga, and the reasoning behind it in the “About” section is brilliant.  Can’t wait to see this one grow.

Favorite Entry: October 5th, 2005.
Had to go way back for this one. Anyone who knows Cheryl, her dad, or just knows any father and daughter would choke up at this entry. The entry itself is the embodiment of her blog – simple, beautiful, and full of love and honesty. That’s why its my favorite.

Snail’s Bite:  Ceciliasjazz.com is available. Definitely try to move your WordPress there and find a layout that will suit your text-focused style. I also love how you upload pictures to highlight your posts. Keep it up!

Fool4God

Fool4God is the alias of Fatima Estorninos.  I’ve known Faye and her family for a long time – since she was just a kid. Watching her grow up before my eyes has been a great blessing. She’s always been a wonderful person, but it’s only in recent years that her artistic side has really exploded. Her Xanga is a testament to that.

Everything on her blog is impeccably laid out. The way she incorporates her photography into entries grabs your interest immediately. The typography is bold without overdoing it, and the external links are interesting without diverting attention. It’s tough to make Xanga look like a legit blog, but she does it perfectly. It’s a delicate balance of so many artistic elements that will only get better as she goes to study abroad in Florence.

Favorite Entry: The Waiting Room, 8 May 2008.
There’s alot of great entries on here, but this hidden gem does it for me. Ironically, its one of her least viewed. I love this post because it shows Faye’s Christian maturity. She’s not a kid anymore.  She’s a Christian adult with the authority to direct us how to act in time of trial. And the wisdom to tie it in with an analogy like that. Brilliant.

Snail’s Bite: I personally don’t like music that autoplays on blogs, but hey, it’s Xanga! Keep doing what you’re doing, its great.

Giles Norway

Alan Gonzales authors this blog straight outta DC. For the moment, I’ll ignore that fact that he’s semi-abandoned it, and write as if 2008 never happened.

Alan, the person, is a very unique soul. He’s easily one of the most naturally creative people I’ve ever met in my life. Whether its art, music, or fashion, it seems like creativity just spews out of him. I have a few theories for why this is. First of all, he’s left handed normal. And I have this deep seeded belief that everyone left handed normal is more creative than me. Second of all, God blessed Alan with a naturally artistic eye, something you can clearly see from his photography. Third, Alan was born and raised in Chocolate city.

You can see how all the elements mix together on Giles Norway to create a gritty, street culture feel. The large text with the whitespace and black text makes everything look and feel big and artsy.  Reading Giles Norway makes me feel like hopping on the Metro and taking a Winter photo-safari of the District. There’s so much potential in this one.

Favorite Entry: Wrap Up Party, 18 December 2008.
Easy choice since this was the only entry left!

Snail’s Bite:  I’d suggest turning Giles Norway into a photo blog & creative outlet. Get a pro Flickr account and tie it in. Find or create a theme that is more photography based and add a plugin for mini-posts. This will put less pressure on you to create long entries and focus more on the things you love doing.  Your pictures are so great, they tell incredible stories without needing any words.

Good Apple Kat

The strength of Good Apple Kat can be summed up in one word: consistency. It is probably the most dedicated and consistent blog on The Roll. This past Lent there was an entry for every day – an online devotional for all Good Apples.

Kathleen Robinos is the soul child behind the curtain. Her entries are beautiful, holy, and musical, just like her. She also speaks with an authority that only comes from being very prayerful. That’s how you are assured that the words aren’t just ramblings, but filled with the Spirit.

Favorite Entry: Justifying the Gray, 29 August 2006.
She might not agree that this is her favorite, but this is definitely her best entry by far. The buzz from it was so crazy - everyone was talking about it.  I actually heard about it even before I read it myself. That’s how popular it was.

Snail’s Bite: Same advice as Cecelia’s Jazz – get a .com and blog away (goodapplekat.com is available). I’d also play off the Good Apple concept a little more and create a whole “tree” (or bushel?) of Good Apple’s following you.  The possibilities are endless!

Coming up next, Part II of Snailbest ’09.
Featuring: januel, jmotive.com, richtu, witness, yodamita.com.
