Music Is My Soul’s Oxygen

Happy Easter to all! Jesus is Risen!

I was uploading some clips from last weekends show onto You Tube.  While waiting for everything to process, I ended up going back through all the great shows, worships, and concerts I’ve played. Talk about good times! I think some of the best memories of my life have happened on stage – many with two guys who are now my groomsmen, might I add. And looking back, it’s pretty awesome/amusing/redonkulous how my musical “career” has come thus far.

Here are as many clips as I could find, that document this snail’s evolution.

2003 MD YFC Conference Bandfest – Confession: I wasn’t playing for God here, I was playing for Cheryl.  (Damn I miss Mark)

Open Air Praise Festival (2003, College Park) — This really was one of the most fun worships I’ve ever played for. I thought I was so cool with my Marshall half stack and Hamer guitar (both Alan’s). But I wasn’t. I love watching fat RJ and skinny Nate haha. (And now I miss Joie!)
Funny Quote of the Day: “Damn Alan… Neal better start learning guitar or something!”

2004 Riverside YFC Conference — First time in National Band. Boy was I nervous! This was during my “I can’t hear myself” days. But its ok, I got to look over Cheryl’s shoulder for the chords. Geez, talk about unfocused!

2006 Houston CFCY Conference — Ok, big leap here from the previous video, but I finally “got it” in terms of the worship sense. Side note:  ROD IS A BEAST!!!

2008 Jacksonville CFCY Conference — DUNKIN DONUTS!  Whew-wee! No comments needed! Can I just give a quick shoutout to Gino and Dunn for hooking up the AC30 with Alnico Blues, and Lendl for picking it up.  I’ve been dreaming about it ever since.

SOS Coffee House (February 2009)– This was my first gig with Mark, and the birthplace of Robot Solos.

Metuchen Diocese Youth Conference (March, 2009)– You can only hear me in the beginning here. I was gonna rip into a huge solo here, but I didn’t wanna cut anyone off. The gospel choir might’ve beat me up. Oh, and the bass player said he played for Alicia Keys in DC.

“‘Let all the earth rejoice,’ was her favorite line.” – Cheryl

Crossroads (Last Weekend)- My current evolutionary state.

So there ya have it. If you’re in one of these videos with me, man I totally respect you as an artist. It’s been an honor jamming and learning with you musicians. I’ve been so blessed to share the stage with you guys. Oh, and another confession, all of you in National Band have intimidated me at our first practice. I kinda just pray myself out of it and keep it to myself.  But you don’t intimidate me anymore haha. Unless you start playing lead guitar, then you probably will.

Thanks for watching! If you played all the vids beginning to end, extra brownie points for you –  I love you too! =)  I know I left out lots of the other ministry conferences, and all of the WCS gigs, but they’re still in my heart. Of note are: SFC Conference 2003 (NJ), CFC Conference 2005 (Roseland Ballroom, NYC!), and whatever that club was in Baltimore where RJ poured water on Alan’s cleavage and got booed off the stage.

Be on the lookout for Snail’s first solo gig (once I get up the nerve to sing in not-magic mic and not-worship)!

Bonus:

My favorite video of them all.

See Snail again in concert!

This Saturday, at the Crossroads in Garwood. This time, I’m playing with Mark Mattheis, another great local singer/songwriter, and a great Catholic brother.

Playing for this show was kind of a last minute thing. I originally said no when he asked me a month ago. Reason being that I wouldn’t be able to make time for practice, what with the wedding and training for the NJ Marathon (or more like not training). Then, this past Sunday, Cheryl, Januel, Lynn and I were sitting at Bonte in South Orange and Mark randomly bumped into us.  He needed a little more backup and since I already knew the songs from the last show, I could just hop on board.

Now I don’t know much about this Crossroads place, but their menu looks slammin. If any of you are around, come by and support. And then buy me a drink and some of them there egg rolls.

Like a Sauna in Here

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

This morning I discovered something completely amazing. Seton Hall University gym has a sauna!

This is now the single greatest benefit of working at Seton Hall. I used to frequent the sauna after every workout when I was still living in Maryland, and working out at Lifetime Fitness. I’d follow it up with a nice cold shower afterwards and the rest of the day would be golden. Since then however, sauna’s have been hard to find. But this morning I peeked into the (empty) shower room to see what it was like (more on this later), and lo and behold there it was. Tucked away in a place that no decent heterosexual man would ever look.

For those of you not privy to the benefits of saunas, read on my uneducated friend. This excerpt discusses the positive effects of 15-20 minutes of sauna use, followed by a cold bath (shower or dip in the pool).

From Wikipedia:

“A reported study from the Thrombosis Institute in London into the effects of the cold bathing found that volunteers that followed a disciplined daily regime had increased immune white blood cells and the level of the bodies natural blood thinning enzymes substantially increased, improving micro circulation… Cold water immersion raises thresholds of pain tolerance, and aids adaptation to cold, reduces muscle spasm, can influence the frequency of respiratory infections and improve subjective well-being… Cold water adaptation reduced total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, lowered plasma viscosity and blood pressure rate product. Cold water immersion reduces recovery time in athletes, enhances repeat performance and reduces exercise induced muscle damage.”

So there you have it. I am on to a arthritis-free, low blood pressure life! For the length of my Seton Hall tenure at least.

About the Locker Room

I am just going to throw this out there because I want to know what other people think. Do you get naked in the locker room? I ask because I always see people walking around after a shower butt naked – mostly old people. And I’m always pretty grossed out. Talk about naked without shame! Some people might say I’m being a baby, or I’m being naive. I don’t care. Sorry that I’m not a fan of seeing other naked men!

So my question to all my Biters out there is, do you do that? Am I the weird one? I’m going to change the poll so I can see what you guys think. But please, by all means, enlighten me!

Robot Solos

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Here’s a few clips of me playing for a Coffee House last night. Why didn’t anyone tell me that I move like a robot when I solo?  If I were on 30Rock I would be saying, “I-am-a-solo-robot” while playing.

Lost My Mind in All My Trouble

About the Coffee House
This was my first ‘venture’ into the local Christian music scene. I’ve been here about a year and I’ve been meaning to find some musicians to jam with. Then I got busy (read: engaged), and the thought kinda fell to the back burner. That all changed when I met this guy Mark about a month ago.

I met him at an Archdiocesan function (the story of which is too long to explain here). During that meeting, someone was sharing about him and mentioned that he played guitar for a retreat. So afterwards we struck up a conversation and when he found out that I was more of a lead player, he flipped and asked me to play for a gig he had coming up – which ended up being what we played last night.

We only practiced 3 times and never as a band. Going into the gig, we didn’t even have a setlist! Mark is crazy! You can tell in one of the clips too, because after my solo for ‘Lost My Mind’ I had no idea where we were in the song and played some wrong chords. And then I totally missed my cue for when to start the ‘Help’ solo! But since we all play for some kind of Church, we kinda just strung everything together and played off our God-given experience. In the end it was an awesome night, with great energy and positive vibes all around.

To top it off, one of the performers led an impromptu closing worship and some of us who played that night (including myself), got up one by one and formed a rag tag worship band. It was so great to see how the Lord can bring all things into harmony through music. Music really is one of God’s greatest gifts to us!

“When you assemble, each one has a psalm.”
1 Corinthians 14:26

“Music is the work of His hand; a product of divinity; a foretaste of the delight that awaits us in heaven.”

02152009057Celebrity sighting!!!

Yesterday, I saw Jamie from Mythbusters in a wine shop on the Upper West Side. I tried to whisper to Cheryl but she didn’t know who I was talking about. And I wasn’t 100% positive it was him. I was about 95% sure, so I snapped this picture real quick.

What do you guys think: Jamie or some impostor with big puffy beard and french hat?
